This activity is designed to help you understand the foundational role of sleep for good health and prevention of chronic disease and identify dietary approaches that can be provided to clients to help improve sleep quality or duration. It is also designed to help you earn continuing education credits for dietetics (CDR CPEU).
Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, nutrition professionals will be better able to:
- Identify specific nutrients that play an important role in sleep quality.
- Recommend foods that may help improve sleep.
- Apply findings from research when counseling clients about food as a tool for improving sleep.
- Discuss potential health issues and chronic diseases that may arise from chronic poor sleep, including poor blood sugar control, increased cortisol levels, elevated blood pressure, mental health issues, weakened immune system response, weight gain, and more.
- Help clients better understand the connection between food and sleep quality, using motivation to sleep better as a way to improve other areas of health as well.

Karman Meyer, RDN, LDN, RYT, has worked in the field of dietetics since 2010 in various settings including clinical, behavioral health, geriatric nutrition, food service management, and public relations. She has a certificate in culinary nutrition and is a registered yoga teacher (RYT). Karman works in the community providing nutrition counseling, employee wellness programs, cooking classes, and nutrition talks. She is the host of the PBS special program, titled “Eat to Sleep,” based on her first book, “Eat to Sleep: What to Eat and When to Eat It for a Good Night’s Sleep – Every Night.”
