Yoga, Meditation, and Ayurveda: Therapeutic Tools for Metabolic Health
Yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda are experiential practices. Understanding of the principles and benefits of these modalities cannot be fully understood without personal experience. Mastery and the ability to teach yoga effectively develop from a daily personal practice. Likewise, skillful communication and incorporation of these practices into metabolic evidenced-based guidelines is supported by the insight gained from personal experience. For this reason, it is highly recommended that nutrition practitioners undertake at least some study before incorporating it into their professional practice.
There are many styles of yoga, and teachers bring with them their training, personal insights, limitations and loving presence. Some styles such as Kripalu, Kundalini, Anusara, and softer Hatha styles are well suited to those with metabolic health conditions. While Astanga, Bikram and other hot yoga styles, and Power Yoga can embody the elements of yoga philosophy and practice, their physically demanding nature may be intimidating and injury-inducing for a beginner with a chronic condition. Skilled and compassionate teachers exist in every style of yoga. With yoga’s explosion in popularity, and with national certifications and professional standards in place, it is easier than ever to identify credentialed yoga therapists. Resources for finding yoga teachers and therapists, and for YT credentialing pathways are included in this course.
